Talented self-motivated make-up artist, Steve Koby is a passionate young man who believes in hard work and discipline. Moreover, the fact that he is one of the few male make-up artists in Kenya doesn’t faze him. He believes that ultimately it is not about gender, but talent.
Like most self-made make-up artists in Kenya, Koby did a few things before realizing his love for make-up. For one, Koby spent two years in the insurance industry and a few months in an online movie rental business before joining a beauty school, Vera Beauty College in 2009. Even then, he wanted to work as a hairdresser. However, while doing beauty therapy at Vera, Koby found a passion for massage therapy and make-up artistry but in the end opted for make-up because of his artistic background.
This proved to be the right decision, when a few months later, Steve Koby met make-up guru Suzie Wokabi and got trained by her. Not only did Suzie Wokabi train him, she provided him with exposure and further ignited his love for the make-up world.
Koby’s big break came in October 2010 when he started working with True Love magazine. From there, he has worked with various personalities such Wyre, Pinky Ghelani, Camp Mulla and Susan Wong among others. Additionally, while working with Tusker Project Fame Season 4 and doing make-up for the contestants, Koby met more media personalities and started building his brand as a make-up artist. A highlight for Koby however, was when he met musician Wahu and worked with her on her music videos ‘Better Days’ and ‘Still a liar.’ To top it all, in 2011, he flew with Wahu to Turkey as her make-up artist to work on the Rexona commercial. In addition, Koby had the chance to work with Diana Opoti on her 100 Days of African Fashion Campaign.
As Steve Koby continues to build his brand, his goal is to be the best of the best, and help build the make-up industry of Kenya. Steve Koby is a reminder that the fashion and beauty industry is not in any way gender specific. Anyone who feels a calling can pursue this dream, of course there might be a few challenges here and there but as the saying goes, better late than never.
