Ohema Ohene is a British fashion brand that was created in 2008 by British born Ghanaian designer Abenaa Pokuaa. The brand specializes in African inspired fashion, more specifically, its Ghanaian heritage with a British twist. As a matter of fact, Ohema Ohene means Queen and King in the Ghanaian language of Twi. The brand aims to push the boundaries of Africa inspired fashion for both men and women and to also spotlight the beauty of Africa. Ohema Ohene produces a range of apparel for both men and women including shirts, blazers and jumpsuits.
Pokuaa established her brand after returning from Hong Kong where she worked as a designer and after taking a short trip to Ghana. Initially, prior to completing a degree in Fashion design technology surface Textiles at London College of Fashion, Pokuaa had been working in the industry developing her technical and commercial understanding. Since its founding, the Ohema Ohene brand has gained international appeal and recognition going as far as winning the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) award in 2010.
What makes Ohema Ohene a truly great brand is that it doesn’t just focus on fashion but has a long term goal of eventually becoming a gateway to prosperity for the Ghanaian community. In addition, the brand plans on changing the perception of Africa by creating beautiful and colorful pieces reflecting the royalty and wonder rarely shown in Africa. Ultimately the brand wants to build a long term source of trade for the Ghanaian people and its neighboring countries. True to this goal, Ohema Ohene has been producing its collections in Ghana since 2013 carrying the “Made in Ghana” label. Currently, Ohema Ohene trains and employs Ghanaians to produce great quality products which are modern yet culturally oriented.
