Swahili Fashion Week 2013 [Dar es Salaam, Tanzania]

“Created as a platform for designers from Swahili speaking countries, to date, we have created an industry which does not only spur the growth of the textile, culture and fashion industry, but also that of the tourism industry. Hosting this year, 45 established designers form Tanzania and beyond, 10 emerging designers and over 30 models and various stakeholders participating in this fashion week be it direct or indirect, this truly has become an event which is a product of communal and cooperative effort.”

Yours fashionably,

Mustafa Hassanali, Founder of SFW {pictured below enjoying the show}

From the onset, the set up was beautiful, white tent overlooking the ocean, shopping tents outside with a barbeque stand, VIP section and inside bar. On the inside, the arrangement was professional and could easily meet international standards. Set up in a U shape, podium set low, seating arrangement conducive for good viewing. All in all, the show was well produced, from naming the designers, lighting, choreography of the models and the consistency. The models were professional and the music was appropriate. Not only was the production top notch, it was clear to see that the audience was never at one point fed up. The vibe was enjoyable and easy going. People were there for the fashion and that is exactly what they received.

All in all, the standards set for the designers showcasing was quite high. What was being shown on the runway, for some designers, could easily be seen in stores. Garments that could be considered ready to wear were yet innovative and creative. Each designer on average presented 10-15 pieces from their collection.

In fashion weeks, such as this one, the idea is to attend and see collections that inspire and awe. There needs to be a sense of innovation and specifically trend setting.  There were some designers that definitely demonstrated boldness, creativity, innovation and a sense of realism. Some notable designs were the following below.

The use of African print material transformed into singular strands attached to the garment to create a stunning effect on the blouses, dresses and collar from NaKadhalika (Tanzania). They describe their designs as “using colorful African fabrics in combination with universal fabrics, NaKadhalika creates fusion and convergence of African persona in modern designs, allowing women to float around time and space and around needs and wants.” Photos courtesy of SWF 2013, photographed by AZH.
