Africa Feature: An artist inspired by African Culture- Otakan Designs (Kampala)

We believe in learning from gaining knowledge to better ourselves in the fashion industry. That includes celebrating, showcasing and promoting Kenyan fashion as well as celebrating those around us. Our Africa Feature comes from Uganda- namely Otakan Designs.

Otakan Designs is a fashion label founded in 2012 by Maria Nakato who has always been fascinated with fashion from the age of 13. Inspired by African culture and fashion, Maria Nakato decided to follow up on her dream and open her own label OTAKAN designs at the age of 22.

“Otakan” is  “Nakato” written backwards and as  fashion house aims to promote and spread African culture through fashion with a modern twist. “ I’m an artist inspired by African culture – fashion and everyday life mostly we individuals who are independent and are working toward something they are truly passionate about.  Realizing what lights your fire and float your boat…THAT’S your life purpose” , Maria says.

Maria’s aim is to grow Otakan Designs into a full self reliant fashion house connecting inspiring and mentoring young and upcoming fashion designers in Uganda and also venturing into fabric sourcing, garmet manufacturing, labeling and packaging to the clients specification as well as managing the export market. A commendable vision.

Take a look at her collection to see why we choose to celebrate Otakan Designs. (Images (c) Otakan Designs) Looking forward to more from her.
