On one of our breaks from Swahili Fashion Week Tanzania 2013, we discovered Uru Diamonds in Slipway Shopping Plaza in Dar es Salaam. Drawn by the Maasai clad shop assistant who was incredibly welcoming, the serene aura and set up of the store we were instantly taken by the unique jewelry.
Uru Diamonds designs “reflects the true essence and spirit of Africa and has been created using the finest rough diamonds, rubies, tsavorites, tanzanites and emeralds cast in gold and silver.”
The word “Uru” refers to an ancient Swahili term describing “a powerful essence, that comes from a diamond worn and cherished by African kings and queens.” The first bracelet made in 2009, was created using locally sourced rough diamonds, gold and fishing line. Now, Uru Diamonds has expanded to create a wide range of bracelets, pendants, rings, cufflinks and other accessories. The bracelet straps are made form hand knotted threads or natural leathers in a wide array of colors carefully selected to math with the precious gem attached to it.
If you ever find yourself in Dar es Salaam, be sure to visit the Uru Diamonds’ store in Slipway to see for yourself first hand. The pieces are even more beautiful in person.
In the interim, here are few images of their collection to demonstrate their uniqueness, appeal and ingenuity.
